Website Planning & Strategy

Whether you're building from scratch or migrating an existing site, effective planning is the foundation of good SEO and user experience.

Starting a New Site Architecture

The Sitemap Planner isn't just for existing sites. You can start with a blank canvas to design your "dream" architecture before a single line of code is written.

Define Your Core

Start with your top-level navigation. Create nodes for your Home, About, Services, and Blog sections first to establish your site's primary intent.

Build Hierarchies

Use parent-child connections to group related content. For example, connect individual service pages to your main "Services" overview page.

Planning Site Migrations

1

Crawl Your Existing Site

Start by running a full crawl of your current website. This gives you an accurate snapshot of every URL, title, and meta tag currently live.

2

Prune Content

Identify low-performing or redundant pages. Use the Sitemap Editor to mark pages for removal or merging into stronger, more comprehensive pieces.

3

Redirect Planning

When changing URL structures, use the Sitemap Editor to plan your 301 redirects. Note down old vs. new URLs directly in the page metadata fields.

Collaborative Brainstorming

Invite your team or clients to view your sitemap plans. Use the visual editor to walk through the proposed architecture and get buy-in before development begins.
