Loose volume is shown after compaction allowance so the estimate better matches what you need to order. For large deliveries, confirm rounding policy with the supplier before purchase.

What is a sand calculator?

Use our sand calculator to find out how much sand you need for any project. Enter your dimensions and the tool calculates the required sand volume in cubic yards, cubic feet, or cubic meters, then converts that figure to weight in tons or number of bags. It works for concrete mixes, mortar, paving, landscaping, and fill applications.

Knowing exactly how much material you need before you order prevents costly overbuying and last-minute shortages on site. This materials calculator handles the geometry and unit conversions so you can focus on the job.

Key inputs

Have your measurements ready before you start. All dimension fields accept inches or feet — pick one unit and stay consistent across all inputs.

InputWhat to enter
LengthMeasure the length of the area to be filled or covered
WidthWidth of the area in the same unit as length
DepthDepth in inches or feet — this drives the volume calculation most
Sand type / densitySelect from presets or enter your supplier's density value
Mix ratioFor concrete or mortar, enter the cement to sand ratio to isolate the sand portion
Waste allowanceAdd 5 to 15 percent for spillage, compaction, and leveling

Common use cases

The calculator handles several project types. Here is how to use the following approaches for the most common applications.

Paver and stone bedding

To calculate how much sand you need for a paver base, measure the length and width of the area and set depth to 1 to 2 inches. The tool returns the volume in cubic yards alongside weight — useful for comparing bulk delivery versus bags. Works for polymeric sand calculator use cases too.

Concrete and mortar mixes

Enter your slab or pour dimensions and select a mix ratio such as 1:2:3 cement to sand to gravel. The calculator isolates the sand required from the total volume so you can order concrete sand separately from aggregate.

Sandbox and play areas

For a sandbox or play sand fill, enter the interior dimensions and target depth in inches. The calculator returns the exact cubic feet of play sand needed and the equivalent number of bags based on your chosen bag weight.

Landscaping and topsoil fill

Use the same length, width, and depth inputs to estimate how much sand or topsoil is needed to fill a raised bed, level a yard, or top-dress a lawn. The formula is equal to the volume of the space you need to fill, adjusted for compaction.

Ordering tips

Use supplier density values

The density of sand varies by type and moisture. Dry sand weighs roughly 1,450 kg per cubic meter while wet or compacted sand weighs more. Always use your supplier's delivered density to find the weight of sand accurately — the default presets are a starting point, not a guarantee.

Round up to full loads

When ordering in bulk, round up to the nearest cubic yard of sand or full delivery load. Partial loads often cost disproportionately more. A small overage is cheaper than a second delivery.

Account for compaction

Loose volume and compacted volume are not the same. For trench backfill or compacted fill layers, apply a compaction factor to your estimate before you order. The calculator returns loose volume — compaction reduces the final depth.

Verify delivery tickets

For structural or large-scale work, verify the actual volume or weight on the delivery ticket against your estimate. For sensitive construction applications, consult your engineer for precise compaction and grading specifications.

Frequently asked questions

How much sand do I need in cubic yards?

Measure the length, width, and depth of the area in feet, then multiply all three together and divide by 27 to convert cubic feet to cubic yards. Or enter your dimensions directly and the calculator handles the conversion automatically.

How do I calculate how much sand I need for pavers?

Enter the paver area length and width, set depth to 1 inch for a standard bedding layer, and select your sand type. The tool returns the volume and weight so you can easily calculate your order for either bulk delivery or bags.

What is the weight of sand per cubic yard?

Sand weighs approximately 2,700 lb per cubic yard for dry sand and up to 3,100 lb per cubic yard when wet. Use our sand calculator with your supplier's density to find the weight for your specific material.

Can I use this to estimate gravel or topsoil too?

Yes. The same volume formula applies to gravel and topsoil. Change the density value to match the material you need and the calculator will return the correct weight and bag count.

How do I convert sand volume to number of bags?

Enter the bag weight in the calculator — typically 25 kg or 50 lb bags. The tool divides the total sand required by the bag weight and rounds up to whole bags so you never come up short.
