How to pace an exam

Divide the available time by the number of sections or questions before you start. Leave the final ten minutes for checking, filling in missed answers and making sure every page is labelled.

The soft warnings at ten, five and one minute give you a final checkpoint without a loud interruption.

Use the warnings

  • 10 minutes left: finish the current question and start reviewing.
  • 5 minutes left: check names, numbers and unfinished blanks.
  • 1 minute left: stop starting new work and secure your paper.

Exam timer rules

This is a visual countdown, not an official exam clock. Use it only where the invigilator or exam rules allow a timer device, and always follow their instructions first.

How it works

Choose the exam length

Pick the closest preset from 30 minutes to two hours.

Start when the exam starts

Start the countdown at the official start time, then keep the tab visible.

Use fullscreen

Fullscreen removes the rest of the page and makes the remaining time easy to read from a desk or projector.

Watch the final warnings

Soft cues at 10, 5 and 1 minute help you move into review without losing focus.

Good to know

  • Use only where the exam rules allow a timer device.
  • The timer runs while this tab is open; keep the screen awake if needed.
  • The official room clock and invigilator instructions always take priority.

Common questions

What exam lengths are included?

The presets cover 30, 45, 60, 90 and 120 minutes, with warnings at ten, five and one minute remaining.

Can I pause the exam timer?

You can pause it, but during a real exam you should normally leave it running. Pausing will not match the official clock.

Does the timer work in fullscreen?

Yes. Use the fullscreen button for a large, distraction-free display on a laptop, tablet or classroom screen.

Is this an official exam clock?

No. It is a visual aid. Follow your invigilator, exam board and room clock as the official source of time.
