How long should a nap be?
A 10 to 20 minute nap is usually enough to improve alertness without a long groggy period. Thirty minutes can work for some people, but it may leave you waking from deeper sleep.
A 90-minute nap allows a full sleep cycle. It can be restorative, but it needs a bigger block of time and is not practical for every day.
How to avoid sleep inertia
- Keep naps short when you need to return to work quickly.
- Wake with bright light and move around.
- Avoid long naps late in the afternoon.
- Give yourself five to ten minutes to wake up before a meeting.
What is a coffee nap?
Caffeine takes about 20 to 30 minutes to start working. Drink a coffee, then lie down for a 20-minute nap. You wake as the caffeine begins to take effect.
How it works
Choose a nap length
Pick a 10-minute power nap, a 20-minute coffee nap or a longer reset when you have more time.
Set the room up
Dim the light, silence notifications and set the timer where you can hear the closing chime.
Start the countdown
The timer runs on a target timestamp, so it stays accurate even if the device sleeps.
Wake gently
The warm chime marks the end. Get up, hydrate and get bright light to clear the grogginess.
Good to know
- The timer runs while this tab is open.
- The closing chime is gentle; keep device volume on if you are a deep sleeper.
- Nap length is personal. Adjust based on how you feel and your schedule.
Common questions
What is the best nap length?
For most people, 10 to 20 minutes is the best balance of alertness and easy waking. Longer naps can be useful when you have more time.
Why do I feel groggy after a nap?
Waking from deep sleep can cause sleep inertia. Shorter naps, bright light and a few minutes to wake up can reduce it.
Does a coffee nap work?
For many people, yes. Drink coffee quickly, then nap for about 20 minutes so caffeine starts working as you wake.
Can I nap at work?
A short 10 to 20 minute nap in a quiet, dim space can help. Keep an alarm and give yourself time to wake before returning.
